Psalmtexte inspirierten Mendelssohn während seines ganzen Schaffens, und er hinterliess neben A-cappella-Sätzen fünf grosse Orchesterpsalmen. Schumann bewertet 1837 Psalm 42 als die „höchste Stufe, die er [Mendelssohn] als Kirchenkomponist, ja die die neuere Kirchenmusik überhaupt erreicht hat“. |
